Also we make a HUGE Announcement toward the end of the show.  We will update everyone on the interwebs in a couple days to allow you to listen to it.

Until we meet again

Back from our break, It's a new Talkin 'Bout Guts

After taking the last couple weeks to get through some things, we are back to it doing what we do best!

Daniel is currently editing together a documentary about the recent NY Get Your Guts In Gear ride.  If you have a story that you would like to share about your experience on it, please email him daniel@talkinboutguts.com.  He's hoping to have it out to all of you in a couple days if everything goes right.

This week, we talk to Jennifer Jaff with the Advocacy for Patients with Chronic Illnesses about the work that they are doing on behalf of paitents everywhere.  They have been heavily involved with the regulations that are coming through with the Health Care Reform legislation that is heading through congress now. Make sure to go check out what they are doing day to day on their Blog and if you have a question or comment or want to donate to the cause, make sure to email Jennifer or give her a call in the office at (860) 674-1370

Here's a note from Producer and Host, Daniel:

"Hello to all out listeners.  I must apologize for the lack of episodes over the last month. There is really nothing that I can say except that I am sorry for the lack of content.  There certantly has been content there to do, I just haven't been able to bring it to you.  Hopefully this last studio change that has happened will allow us to do the content that you deserve.  With that in mind, if you have an idea that you would like to see happen on the show, please email us talk@talkinboutguts.com and we will do what we can to make it happen, even let you run the show if it's what you would like. If you are someone that we have talked to in the past about doing a show, please forgive me. I will be pouring through the emails over the next couple weeks and contacting you about an interview soon. Thank you and please, have a disease free week!"

Until we next meet again!

Big Ideas and Cool Authors this week on Talkin 'Bout Guts

This week on Talkin 'Bout Guts, we talk about what happened this season on Grey's Anatomy in relation to how they have portrayed Ostomies, Sit down with Brenda Elsagher to talk about her writing including the 4th book she is currently working on, and talk about what's coming up next.

This week, for the 2nd time this season, the writers and producers of Grey's Anatomy have taken the time to reinforce a lot of negative stereotypes in society on their show.  There are a lot of things happening to try and inform the writers of thier error.  Here's just a few:

There is a new Facebook group that has started: Shame On Grey's Anatomy for their negative views on Ostomies
There is a email campaign that has started to ABC that will hopefully help out. Want to join, go to ABC.com and click on the Contact Us link
If you want someone to call, here's the number to Miguel (the Executive Producer's assistant) 323-671-5744. He hasn't been too helpfull, giving me an unmonitored email address, but maybe someone else can get through to him and get something usefull.
The UOAA claims it is working on something, but as I have yet to see anything about this, I will assume that they are just keeping appearances by saying they are but probably have nothing in the works.

Matt and Daniel have some great ideas on what needs to happen, and the realization is that Grey's Anatomy isn't where our efforts should be.  We talk about what needs to happen to really get traction in the awareness movement, but nobody wants to listen.  Our gripe, don't say you want to raise awareness and continue to preach to the choir, it get's you nowhere.

This week, Daniel sat down and talked to Brenda Elsagher. She is currently working on her 4th book about Ostomies and the Bedroom.  If you want to join in on the fun, check her website out http://www.livingandlaughing.com/ or send her an email brenda@livingandlaughing.com. Her phone # is also on the website.

Till next week...

Lots of Good News this week on Talkin 'Bout Guts

This week we get a ton of good news, talk with people doing a great thing for youth, and talk about my upcoming "sabatical" that I will be taking.

This week, we received great news for us, and hopefully for you.  Our friends at Get Your Guts In Gear think that the work we have started is great, and have decided to help us spread the word even farther. Their support will allow us to expand the show, go places we probably wouldn't have had the means to get to, and bring you exciting new features.  It won't be overnight, but over time we will be taking this to places we never expected it to go when we launched it only 14 weeks ago.

This week, we also received a press release from ConvaTec about a cool new Ostomy product they have been working on and finally got 510(k) clearance from the FDA. Read the release Here

Also this week, we had the pleasure of talking to Esten, Cheryl, and Paul. They are all connected to the wonderment that is Youth Rally in one way or another. Esten is a Counslor this year after finding out about this later in life. Cheryl had a bit more familiar story to those that have been a part of this for a while. She started as a camper and after graduating the program became a counslor. Paul (or Dad as he likes to think of himself as) is the Chairman and CEO of YRC Inc., the company on the backbone of Youth Rally.  In some way, shape, or form, they all have had their lives changed by the experiences at Youth Rally.  They share their stories this week. Want to know more about Youth Rally? Head to their website http://www.rally4youth.org/

As most of you know, I am about to go under the knife again this week.  We want to bring you through my head as I go through this again. This time around it is a little different for me as I am not going through it for the first time and I have had an ostomy for a couple months now. I hope that you get something out of the experience that I am about to go through.  If you have any suggestions for Matt on what he should talk about or cover, send him an email Matt@talkinboutguts.com.

We also have set up a chat room for you all to use if you so chose.  One of us will always be in there and will answer questions as we see them.  While I go through surgery I will be in there during my recovery. Please feel free to drop in and talk with us or use it to talk with eachother if you want. Just click on the link at the top of this page "Come Chat With Us"
We based this in irc network. If you know what's happening with this, feel free to use your favorite irc client to get to us. irc.echo34.net #talkinbotuguts.

We will be taking a week off as I will be still be in the hospital when we would have recorded and posted the next episode. We will return in 2 weeks with new episodes.

Until we meet again.

Back To The Grind For Episode 13 of Talkin 'Bout Guts

This week on Talkin 'Bout Guts, we give a quick update on our friends doing amazing things around the world, talk with the creator of a really cool new social network for IBD's, and give an update on my upcoming surgery.

The Cycling SemiColons are making their way across the nation.  Unfortunately Jay ran into some health problems (Get Better Soon Jay!), but Todd is continuing the route until Jay can join back into the ride.  As of this morning, He had crossed into Texas. Have a safe Journey and we look forward to checking in with you soon!

Watch their Blog and Twitter Here and see exactly where he is via GPS Here

The IBD Adventures crew had touched down in Lukla and has started there ascent to the base camp of Mount Everest.  They have been sharing some great stories along the way. Take a minute to check out what their doing and see some AMAZING pictures of Everest on their site http://www.nogutsknowglory.com/

Jason was kind enough to share his story with us today. Check out what he, and 450+ other people are doing on the Crohn's Disease Support Network (CDSN) Here and follow along on Twitter if you have one of those Here.

As you all may know, or few will be finding out, I am back on the table in the next couple weeks for (what I hope to be) my last surgery.  We will be working with my doctors and nurses to try and bring you a really up close of what this experience is like to go through.  I hope you all will get something out of my experiences.

Until we meet again...

Standing on our Soapboxes this week on Talkin 'Bout Guts

Warning: This weeks episode was left unedited and uncensored for a reason. Listener discression is advised.

This week on Talkin 'Bout Guts, Daniel and Matt had to take a minute to get on their soapboxes and talk about some things that they believe need to be addressed.

My Apologies for not getting this information on the site yesterday when I posted this episode. But here's what you want to know

This year, the FY11 Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Bill cuts funding for the CDC's IBD Epidemiology Program.  This would cut VITAL research into IBD, diseases that are already relatively unknown to the medical community and the world.  With so much unknown, and so many people that have run out of treatment options, research is critical, and it will be cut unless we speak up! Please take a minute to write your representatives and tell them that they can NOT let this happen!

To get to the directory of members of the House of Representatives, click HERE
To get to the directory of members of the Senate, click HERE

Tony Kornheiser, host of his own show on ESPN radio 980 in DC and TV host of ESPN's PTI and Monday Night Football went on a rant on March 11, 2010 against bicyclists saying "Run Them Down!" and "Just bump them off the road..."  The audio of this rant in its entirity is in the show.
On March 19th, he had Lance Armstrong on the show to apologize for his rant.  Listen to that audio HERE

I could not find a direct email address for Tony, but you can contact the show through their web form found HERE.  You can also contact the heads of ESPN Radio, and ESPN TV. I am working on finding proper email addresses to the Disney corporation (the parent company to ESPN)

We will be back on Wednesday with a special edition of Talkin 'Bout Guts where we will be talking to Rob Hill, a man who lives with Crohn's and an Ostomy, who is taking off to go climb Mt. Everest.

Until Then... you can always email the show talk@talkinboutguts.com

Almost like we knew what we were doing this week on Talkin 'Bout Guts

This week on Talkin Bout Guts, we talk about Awareness coming in situations that you may not expect it, get funny with a guy living with Crohn's and finding all the creative ways to raise money for the cause, and Matt decides to surprise Daniel with a Mystery question

This past weekend, both Daniel and Matt volunteered to work the Get Your Guts In Gear booth at the Seattle Bike Expo to try and find some more riders for this years rides.  While there, both were surprised by the stories that were shared about people either living with or know people living with IBD or an Ostomy. They share about their experience with that.

Also on this show, we talk to Gary Beckman, a guy living with Crohn's who not only finds ways to have way too much fun in everything that he does, he finds some very creative ways to raise money for awareness and research.  Check out his blog here

Matt's new feature on the show... His Mystery Question of the Week.  He has decided to try and surprise Daniel with a random question that he has though of throughout the week.  What has he come up with this week???

As always, if you have anything to say about anything... please email us!

Until Next Week!

Another Week, Another Episode for you!

This week on Talkin 'Bout Guts, we read a letter that was sent to us from a listener, talk to a teenager that isn't letting IBD stop him from doing the things he wants to do... including climbing 17,000ft to the base of Mt. Everest, and talk a little bit about what happened in Washington DC during Great Comebacks.

Clinton Shard, a 17 yr old from Squamish, BC, isn't letting his Crohn's disease stop him from making the trek with Rob Hill to the base camp of Mt. Everest in just a few short weeks.  He also summitted Mt. Kilimanjaro with Rob in September of 2009.  In the run-up to making the Everest trip, he is traveling around Canada telling his story to hopefully inspire others to not let IBD stop them! Check out his story Here and Here

You may have notice the new graphic.  Well after all the submissions, we have found a logo that we absolutely fell in love with and we think that absolutely gets what it is that we are doing here.  We have to thank Michael for taking the time to submit it! We will have him on the show to reveal the super secret prize for making it!

In the near future, we will be relaunching the website! If you have any input on what we need on it, please let us know! We want to make it as user friendly as we can and give you access to all the information that you want.

Until next week, please feel free to email us Talk@TalkinBoutGuts.com
